Gransfors Bruks Hand Hatchet

  While not a 'Woodsman' (per se), as a former volunteer for my Local Wildlife Trust i've grown to appreciate the hidden value of a well-crafted tool for use in appropriate non-violent circumstances, and am happy to have it as it's an asset in my backpack. Have been a keen Bushcraft enthusiast for many years, am am happy to learn how to use the Hatchet effectively in essential situations (while still retaining my fingers)! - A Beautifully Crafted, razor-sharp tool for considerate and careful users.... FIVE STARS *****

  This is a beautifully weighted axe, it is really useful and easy to use. You will have it with you when needed as it is so small! The only downside is that for this price I would expect the handle to have been treated as my previous axes were, why are they no longer doing this?

  My third Gransfors Bruks axe and it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Fantastic ergonomics and quality materials - second to none. Great out in the woods or near the fireplace at doing it’s job!

  A very nice hatchet and just the right size for carrying in your rucksack alongside your bahco saw a great combination.

  Great little axe and great service as usual. This will be used to cut kindling for the wood burner and accompanying me on camping trips.

  I received notification by email that this axe was in stock albeit in small numbers. I placed my order straight away. The axe is far better than expected. Beautifully crafted throughout. Yes, there are axes out there that I’m sure would be perfectly functional at a fraction of the price but that argument could be used with most premium items. There is a ‘joy of possession’ that outweighs functionality. The axe head is hand forged and bears the initials of the smith who crafted it. The edge is razor sharp and the handle is perfectly shaped and has been dipped in hot linseed oil and than coated in beeswax. The leather head cover fits well and completes the axe. Highly recommend if you can get one!

  The overall hands-on feel of the Gransfors Bruks hand hatchet feels 'just right'; for my purpose, it serves as a bushcraft/carving axe and is used for small wood splitting type of work. It would have deserve 5 stars, but similar to some reviewers have observed, I also feel the axe is somewhat 'rough around the edges' and not quite deserving the 'premium' brand image; the handle is a bit rough and the fitting around the neck (? not sure if terminology is correct) is not completely 'tight'. I am not experienced enough with Gransfors Bruks to say whether this is normal, so I'll reserve my judgement. But if I was buying from a physical store with the choice to pick from a few, I probably would not have picked this one.

  Hatchet arrived very quickly in Hong Kong. Perfect condition. The best axes there are. Great addition to my other Gransfors axes.

  Please be aware that a few of the Gransfors Bruks axes/hatchets now come with a slightly sticky 'varnish' to stop them from rusting. This means that they look like they are chipped, broken and damaged and used on first inspection but they are just covered in what I guess is a natural protector (as they tend to only use natural stuff) the edge is still sharp enough to shave with but bits of the roughened leather sheath etc will be stuck to the outside of the head. The coating will easily come off quickly with normal use. There is no official statement as of the time of this review but if you email them, they will explain. The handle is roughened purposely so do not expect a smooth finish to it. For double the price this item would still be a great purchase. Just know what it is meant for.
