The Wastikivi Axe Stone and Ray Mears Leather Belt Case are a prefect set up for sharpening your tools. The exceptional sharpening stone, round in shape, along with the exquisite leather case have been specifically designed with the end user in mind.
The advantage of using a round axe stone is that it is easy to produce the tough convex edge bevel ideal for chopping and splitting. The Wastikivi Axe Stone is made from natural stone, it has a grit of between 800-1000. It produces a slurry well, without the need for a specialised slurry stone and despite its hard nature sharpens quickly, particularly when used with high quality carbon steel axes.
This stone is best used with water, but being non-porous it does not need to be soaked and can simply be made wet for immediate use. Its non-porous nature also means that it is less prone to frost damage when used in sub-zero temperatures.
While the stone is tough, we have chosen to compliment it with a handmade leather case for the stone’s protection and so that it can be carried when needed on your belt. By counterpoint to today’s throwaway culture, in the Woodlore tradition, we intend this product to provide you with many years of hard service, and hope that it will become a family heirloom handed down to future generations.
The axe stone is manufactured by Wastikivi Finland. It is made from phyllite, a metamorphised form of slate which has been used for sharpening since at least the sixteenth century. The stone is 2 cm thick and 6.5 cm in diameter.
The leather belt case has been specifically designed and made in our workshop by our legendary master leather crafter. The round shape makes this case very convenient for carry on your belt using the neat leather loop on the back. The belt loop is designed for use with belts up to 5cm (2 inch) wide. The flap carries the Ray Mears 'Snowshoe' logo and is secured with a small brass Sam Browne stud. The shaped front edge of the case and a gentle squeeze to the sides of the opening allow for easy access to the stone.
Should the leather become wet remove the stone and allow the leather to air dry thoroughly in a cool place. The outside of the case can be treated with a light coating of a proprietary leather oil to keep it supple and prolong its life.
