The Ray Mears Leather Dog Collar is a beautifully crafted, hard-wearing accessory for your dog, handmade from a single piece of supple, fine quality heavy bridle butt.
Many of us who spend our lives outdoors do so with our best friends – our dogs, and if you like Woodlore’s leatherwork then you will love our new dog collars.
These flat collars are lovingly created from the same sturdy yet supple British leather as our belts and individually crafted in house by our leather-worker of over 25 years’ experience. The leather is hand-dyed to Woodlore’s Rich Brown colour and shows all the beauty of its full natural grain. The edges are bevelled and hand-burnished with beeswax in dark brown and finished with a traditional crease line. The attractively shaped ‘West End’ harness buckle and generous dee-ring are British made solid cast brass with a strong stainless steel tong to the buckle; a single fixed leather loop with matching crease lines keeps the strap end in place. Stitching is done by hand using a rot-proof waxed and braided polyester thread in a colour to match the edges; a traditional stitching method using two needles creates a strong stitch and attractive finish. The Ray Mears 'snowshoe' logo is discreetly displayed within the stitching near the dee.
We are confident that these beautiful collars will outlast any that you can buy on the high-street and look great on your dog too.
Measuring
There are 4 sizes to choose from, with 5 holes for adjustment on each:
- Small: 3/4” (19mm) strap width. Fits 26cm – 34cm. (Jack Russel Terrier)
- Medium: 7/8” (22mm) strap width. Fits 35cm – 44cm. (French Bulldog, Beagle)
- Large: 1” (25mm) strap width. Fits 44cm – 54cm (Boxer, Golden Retriever, Labrador)
- X Large: 1” (25mm) strap width. Fits 54cm – 64cm (Great Dane)
We strongly suggest that you measure for your new collar using one of the methods below:
Measure the old collar: this is our preferred method as you know it sits in exactly the right place and how tight or loose it needs to be. Take the collar off your dog and lay it out on a flat surface. Place a ruler or tape measure alongside the collar and making sure it is sitting flat, measure from inside the tip of the buckle (where the hole sits when it is done up)to the hole that is currently used. If you are not happy with the fit of your current collar then we advise that you measure your dog.
Measure the dog: use a cloth tape measure to wrap around the dog’s neck where the collar will sit, don’t forget that this might be under the fur for some breeds. Allow a little ease by measuring with 2 fingers under the tape. You can use this method with string if you don’t have a cloth tape measure – then lay the string out flat to measure with a rule.
If the measurement falls on the largest measurement for a given size we suggest you consider moving up a size. (You can add an extra hole to tighten the fit but you can’t make the collar strap longer!) Youngsters may need growing room and dogs that pull on the lead may stretch the leather collar in use so bare these things in mind too.
Care
The leather used to make these collars is naturally tanned using bark (no pun intended) rather than chemicals and so has no inherent waterproofing. To aid with water repellency and to keep the leather supple we recommend application of a greasy leather feed prior to use and occasionally there-after. Make sure the leather is dry before you apply any feed. You can clean the collar with a damp cloth or sponge and saddle soap if required. A soft brush is useful for removing excess soap, dirt or feed from stitching. If the collar becomes very wet you may wish to remove it from your dog and allow it to dry in an airy place away from direct heat.
