The Rogue RB5 Trans Africa Boot is essentially a premium, water-resistant version of their classic RB2 Trail Boot. Made in South Africa, the boot was specially developed for the Cape to Cairo walk in 1998 as a hard-working trail/walking boot, and has been worn exclusively by Wilderness Trail Guides in the Kruger National Park since 2003.

The Rogue RB5 Boot is made using superior African leathers, features a water-resistant outer, waterproof insole and is comfortable from the first use. Scratch marks and scars occur naturally on these hides; these marks should give your boots the unique rugged 'bushveld' look, indicative of the African outdoors!

When we started making footwear in 1976, we set out to make functional, hard-working and durable footwear, using superior leathers, soles and quality fittings. All our footwear is constructed using the tried-and-tested 'Stitchdown' method for comfort. Our shoe moulds are all in half-sizes for a more generous and spacious fit.

I've had my RB-5 boots for just over a year now. I absolutely love them. They're exactly what I wanted. I live in the Southeast U.S and the summers are very hot. The boots are unlined and breath very well, keeping my feet a lot cooler. I'll never go back to gortex lined boots in the hot months again. I've been so impressed with the quality and construction that I just ordered the Rogue desert boots from Woodlore.

The boots arrived next day, the half sizes and wider fit are very welcome for me and they were immediately comfortable on first use. Pulley wheels in the lace holes are a nifty feature and the leather quality and construction of the boots are excellent. I rarely buy on line, but this was easy, worked well and is entirely satisfying. My previous Light Trekking boots from the store took me several thousand miles over 7+ years and only failed when my big toenail wore a hole in the upper. Tip - trim toenails regularly.

First of all I would like to thank Woodlore for providing the best customer service I have ever received from an online retailer. After a problem with my boots, Woodlore sorted the issue immediately, without question, and made a customer for life. Onto the boots...I have been wearing these boots regularly for 6 months. They have been used in a wide range of environments from the Scottish highlands in snow, rain and bog to the rugged and parched southern coastline of Crete. Reasons I like these boots: 1. There is no Goretex - Goretex will fail after a day of heavy use in wet conditions and get worse and worse with time. (Trust me I used to work for a company selling Goretex products (I've seen the real statistics)). On multi-day trips your boots will never dry as the Goretex holds the water in. These leather only Rogue boots will get wet sooner, but they will dry sooner. Just wear waterproof socks if it is particularly wet or change your socks at midday in damp conditions. Otherwise proof your boots well with a wax/conditioner blend like Ledergris and it is surprisingly effective. 2. The main piece of leather from which the boots are constructed goes all the way round the boot to the heel - most modern leather boots use smaller pieces of leather to save on waste and thus have seams at the flex point which inevitably fail and encourage water ingress. 3. The boot lining is also leather - fabric lining will fail faster and give you blisters. 4. There is no insulation in the main boot, just padding at the ankle - insulation holds water, I don't want 'memory foam comfort' or anything similar, just leather. Insulation also is not suitable for hot climates. Having used these in both very hot and cold climates I was very impressed with their comfort at both extremes. 5. The tongue is well sewn in right to the top of the boot. 6. The midsole is not moulded in any way, it is just a fat piece of leather. Modern boots with built in contouring can be uncomfortable especially with custom/larger insoles which then won't sit flat inside the boot. One small criticism I have is that water pools over the 'top down' stitch encouraging ingress - I imagine a low-viscosity silicone sealant applied over the seams would fix the problem although I haven't had a chance to test this.

Great boots, quality materials and they look good too. After two weeks of breaking in they are extremely comfortable. I am a size 11 (UK) and after reading reviews on the boot ordered a 10.5. Several people recommended getting the half size down. They were a little tight but after getting them thoroughly wet and wearing them constantly for two weeks they have stretched, however, I can only wear a thin sock. I would recommend getting the half size larger - you can always put I a thicker insole and thick socks. This is my fault and no reflection on the quality of the boots.

I bought these boots after a while spent browsing various makes. I'd been searching for a while for a suitable replacement for a pair of boots I'd had for 8 years and was swayed by previous reviewers emphasising the Rogues' out of the box comfort. And they were bang on. These boots are wonderfully easy to wear. The lacing offers plenty of flexibility and they provide excellent ankle support. I went for a half size smaller and I'm glad I did. They fit well with thin or thick socks (lacing again) and I've had no issues with hot spots forming or blisters. I've been up to the Highlands in them and have used them for everyday wandering and dog walking and they are well suited to all of these activities. And they look good, too. The soft leather doesn't take long to start getting authentically scuffed and distressed and regular treatment with Leder Gris keeps them pretty water resistant. Leastways I haven't had any wet feet issues and I live in Scotland, the home of inclement weather. I would recommend these boots to anyone looking for comfortable and rugged multi-purpose footwear. But the other reviewers are dead right about the insoles. Chuck 'em as soon as possible and replace them with something a little more giving. You don't need to spend lots of money. My insoles were less than a fiver from a local shoe repair place (big name, you know the one, shops on every high street - between the pound shop and the betting shop, probably) and they just put the final perfect finishing touch to the boots. Lovely. Thanks Woodlore for a super fast delivery, too. Great job.

Very impressed with the quality of the boots and very comfortable from the first wearing. Only one little niggle. The laces do not match. One lace is a slightly darker brown and thinner than the other.

I have been musing over these boots for a few years and finally put the cash down. I have a number of light hiking boots but have always been interested in light, leather boots for versatility and robustness. I have not had the chance to use them except to walk around a few trails, nothing arduous but, really appreciate the craftsmanship and design. I thought I was going to return them as they did not wow me out of the box. I can say that was wrong. They are quite light, fit very comfortably and are breaking in really quickly. The roomy toe box will be really useful in the cooler weather when thick socks are required. These boots really fit the bill for anyone that needs a light and sturdy hiking boot that will stand up to the rigours of bush work, hunting or camping. I am super glad not to have returned these.

This is the second pair of RB-5s I've owned – the last ones sadly getting lost in a Spanish airport. The fact I've purchased again speaks volumes about them; I've had my second pair for six months (my previous ones well over a year), hence I am in a good position to pass judgement. They've taken a battering in all dry/wet conditions, mainly from dog-walking (and some camping/hiking). Good points: sturdy, super-comfortable (which gets better with time), wide footbed for toe-movement, great grip from sole in dry and wet conditions (it's durable too), very good ankle support (I would prefer a bit more height), very good quality materials – in particular the outer leather, and, last but not least, they're quite rare in the UK and they look great with jeans, shorts or hiking trousers. Bad points: the finish is quite poor on some parts of my boots (both pairs were the similar, with uneven stitching; asymmetric joins from sole to boot in more than one area, pieces of thread left longer than others), and dreadful inner sole that you'll want to replace immediately before the boots start to shape to your feet. Also, on my second pair, my big toes made holes through the thin, inner leather lining, which happened within the first month of use. I'm not going to berate the relative lack of water-resistance on the RB-5s – a pair costs about £30-50 less than an equivalent Gore-Tex-lined product from Meindl or Zamberlan, so people shouldn't expect 100% against leakage. That said, they're good enough to keep feet pretty dry for a good 6-7 months of the year in the UK, but they are not for country walking in winter. Conclusion: though not ideal this is still a superb product, and worthy of the £125 price, because I have never bought another boot for the same money that is the equal of it.

Hi Woodlore. I have been wearing the Rogue Trans Africa boots for about two weeks. I ordered the boots on Wednesday evening and they arrived Friday afternoon. After trying them out and using them Saturday morning I found them to be the right size and they are of comfortable fit. One week later I decided to take them to the Brecon Beacons for a hill walking weekend. I had no problems with the boots considering I'm still breaking them in. And of course you need to maintain the boots with a popular footwear aftercare system, for example, Nikwax. In a short while the leather has started to condition nicely. If you like traditional leather footwear then these are the boots for you.

Purchased size 8 1/2, normally a 9, very comfortable and quiet boots when worn in. Put leder gris on to soften, works a treat. Also needs new laces and insoles. Takes about two week to wear in. Would buy again and would use Woodlore; very fast delivery and top service.
