The Brynje Antarctic Jacket with Hood is a unique insulating outer/mid-layer, designed for year-round use in cold weather. The garment consists of three important layers: a Teflon-treated merino wool outer, an innovative polypropylene mesh lining, and an additional windproof and breathable membrane. Devised by a team with years of winter expedition experience behind them, this system of synthetic mesh underneath a soft wool layer provides a stronger garment than standard woollen clothing, as well as improved moisture-wicking ability.

While it may sound like an odd combination, this mesh-lined system has been tested and proven over decades' of expeditions in some of the harshest environments. In fact, Brynje clothing was worn by the adventurers Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, on their legendary expedition to scale Mount Everest in 1953. The merino wool outer provides an extremely soft, warm and comfortable feel, while the mesh inner helps to trap pockets of air giving superb insulation.

The Antarctic Jacket includes a number of much-needed features for winter wear, all of which will be appreciated when the cold weather hits. These include the aforementioned Proline Windstopper windproof membrane, which provides all-over protection from biting winds; a fitted, adjustable hood; a drop-tail hem in the back for keeping out draughts; toggle adjustments at the hem and hood for a close fit; snug cuffs with hand-warming thumb-holes; a full-length zip with a tall collar; zipped chest pockets; zipped hand pockets; and finally, zipped vents under the arms for heat management.

This garment has been designed for year-round use in cold conditions, including extended winter expeditions. Thanks to its casual style, the Antarctic Jacket is equally suitable for use when travelling, walking or everyday wear at home or in the office during the winter months.

I purchased this item in the first half of November and am reviewing it in early February 2026, so I have had some time to wear and evaluate this top. I am very pleased with it and have worn it at some point on virtually every day since I bought it, including right now. It is comfortable and retains heat well and although it feels quite weighty when you pick it up, you don't notice it when wearing it. Although quite pricey, I feel I am already getting good value from it. Colour perception is somewhat subjective, but I see the colour of the actual fabric in my possession as a little more of a muted moss green compared to the product image, which is not a criticism, as I really like it. The top has a tailored fit and doesn't look out of place around town, whilst being very well suited to time off the beaten track in the countryside. I originally ordered a small size, which is listed on the website as a 38 inch chest, which I am. However, when it arrived and I tried it on, I was disappointed to realise that it was quite tight-fitting and the sleeves were shorter than I would want and also the body length was on the short side for me. I knew I was not going to be happy with it, so I posted it back to Woodlore the very same day and requested replacement with a medium, listed as a size 40 inch chest. I was mightily relieved when I received the replacement and tried it on and it was perfect sizing for me. If required, I am able to wear it with a Merino base layer and a shirt and it feels just right for me with a 38 inch chest and 5 feet 10 inch height. It is the first item of Brynje clothing I have ever purchased and it can be a bit hit-and-miss getting the right sizing, as different brands can vary quite a bit. It's been machine-washed several times, turned inside-out, as per the label instructions and it dries out more quickly than I would have expected, just being air-dried in the home environment. So, in conclusion, I am very happy with my purchase and wish I had bought it sooner, as I was thinking about it for quite some time, and I would have avoided the hit of a price increase!

Very warm jacket, perfect for cold windy days. The colour is closer to olive drab than a kaktus lighter green, and the merino wool outer is 70% rather than the listed 80%, that said its still a fantastic piece of kit. Fast delivery.

I love this jacket. I cant believe how warm and comfortable it is. Although we've still had some cold weather, I'm looking forward to the depths of next winter so that I can use this jacket when I go out. There are four good sized pockets, two on the chest and two hand -warmer pockets. Highly recommended.

Very impressed - generous cut, without being baggy. Very substantial jacket, with quite a lot of weight to it - you know you are getting quality! Very warm and windproof even as a stand-alone. The green colour is more of an olive drab shade. Wish Brynje would have put the Norwegian Expedition Patch on, as I have seen on the home country ones!
