The Mercator K55K is a traditional folding pocket-knife of historic origin, first produced in the iconic knife-making town of Solingen, Germany in 1867. Little has changed from the original design, yet despite being in production now for over 140 years, the K55K is surprisingly modern even by today's standards, exceeding the quality and design of many newer knives. Perfect as a working tool for stalkers and bushcrafters alike, it also makes an ideal gift for collectors of historic knives.

Here at Woodlore we are very excited to become a small part of the K55K's history, by way of being the only UK stockists of this legendary knife. In recognition of our belief in this product, we have added our own touch to the K55K by having an exclusive version produced just for us; this 'Woodlore model' features a custom handle in Reed Green, with the classic K55K logo engraved in black.

The K55K first gained popularity in the United States following World War II, when returning servicemen brought Mercator knives home from Germany. Since then, the K55K's reputation has grown and grown, with outdoorsmen all over the world discovering its compact size, light weight (only 76 g) and premium build quality. The locking blade is made from Stainless Steel, resulting in a knife that is built to last and easy to sharpen. Ray Mears recommends the RWS Quick Sharp as the perfect sharpener for the K55K.

The knife's unique name originates from the company's founder, a Mr. Kauffmann. Mercator is the Latin translation of 'trader', which in turn is the English meaning of Kauffmann. The model name, K55K, comprises of the founder's initial, followed by the street number of the company's original address – Hochstrasse 55. The second 'K' is the initial of the German word for cat – katze - and the famous 'leaping cat' logo can be found engraved on the side of the handle. Indeed, for many years the knife was simply known as the 'Black Cat', or 'Jumping Cat' by American soldiers.

All folding knives should always be used with caution.

I bought this knife to replace one that I lost at work. I am a farmer, and my knife is used on a daily basis to carry out various tasks. This knife is fantastic, it is very tough, stays sharp for long periods of time, and is very easy to get a very sharp edge. I would recommend this knife to anybody needing a great knife that will not break the bank.

An essential part of my EDC (Every Day Carry). So slim you don’t even know you’ve got it in your pocket, yet strong enough for most jobs. It holds of good edge without the need to constantly re-sharpen. Overall excellent and highly recommended.

The slim blade of this knife makes it very versatile, it has good steel that holds its edge.

Classic 18th century industrial product, designed with a build quality keeping up with modern age usabilty. Yes there are more modern steels used today in high end knifes and may probably have more technical finesse, but it is a well built common stainless knife steel still good for EDC. Thumbs up 5 stars for a good price/value knife.

Simple, functional design. Beautiful colour. The blade was razor sharp. Tried and tested design, with a Woodlore touch.

Like many of the reviews I read here state, this is a really high quality pocket knife for the money. A great size blade, supremely easy and smooth to open and equally so to close. Very slim and light so no bulk when in your pocket, but sufficiently weighty and sturdy enough to give you confidence in using it. Very pleased indeed.

This is a great knife at a great price (nearly half the price of some other competitors). I've been meaning to buy one for years, as it's s design classic, just as Opinels and Douk-Douks are, but when I saw that there was a Ray Mears version in green, I had to get it! My knife turned up super sharp, with great lock up and no blade play whatsoever. It's not the world's most sophisticated knife, but a reliable 'beater' that would provide useful service for years and holds a little piece of history too.

Great product so far. The blade could be a little sturdier (compared to a Leatherman blade), but very hard to find faults for the price - great purchase!
