S. Djarv Hantverk Small Adze

  The adze arrived in excellent order, ironically at almost the same time as a Narex equivalent which I ordered as it looked as if the wait for this one would be indefinite! (A web search suggests that as I write supply problems are not confined to Woodlore). So an expensive mistake on my part but it allows for a comparison. The Narex is slightly bigger and heavier, with only a single bevel on the blade, it comes with a small blade protection sheath, and is less than half the price. BUT - the S.Djarv product is far sharper and pretty much ready for use out of the box. The other does work, but in my opinion it will need work on the blade to be fully functional. As an Adze novice, they have had their first uses by me hollowing out a tree stump to make a plant container, the S Djarv adze is clearly better. Is it more than twice the price better? My rather subjective view is that for a piece of kit which should last a lifetime, yes. The problem is getting hold of one. It would be nice if it came with a blade sheath.

  Great little adze, delivered very promptly. Usual top quality hand made item by Svante Djarv. Razor sharp, great design. Compact and light in the hand, so far it has proved very effective at roughing out small bowls prior to gouge work to smooth the bowl out. The haft felt unusual when first used compared to the profile of a typical axe haft, but functioned excellently for me. Not supplied with a leather mask, but these can be bought at the Woodsmith. Experience for a reasonable price if you call them.

  Came sharp and held a good edge, just required minor stropping after chopping out a large sycamore bowl. Prefer this one to a friends Granfors adze that I tried. Incidentally Ray Mears had one in stock when no one else did.

  A brilliant hand-made adze from Sweden. The quality of this product could hardly be better. It's easy to use on dry or fresh pine and allows easy ingress into the timber for working whichever shape you desire. If starting out making larger bowls and such like then you need this adze. I'm delighted.
