The Ray Mears Golden Eagle Bag is a premium-quality 4-season synthetic sleeping bag, designed exclusively for Woodlore by Ray Mears.

The Golden Eagle was primarily designed for use through late autumn to early spring in the UK. However, it is also suitable for use in colder regions, proving itself in laboratory tests to provide safe insulation at temperatures as low as -22°C. This model has been tested extensively for more than a decade in various environments around the world, and remains the winter bag of choice for both Ray Mears and the Woodlore team.

The Golden Eagle contains a form of synthetic insulation known as Climashield Apex; an innovative fabric that is the most lightweight and thermally efficient continuous filament insulation on the market today. Climashield Apex provides durable warmth under harsh conditions, holding its original shape and properties no matter how many times your bag is compressed or washed.

All of our sleeping bags utilise a central-zip design; a simple feature which makes a huge difference in the field. Originally found in military sleeping bags, the central-zip makes getting in and out of the bag far easier than traditional side-zip designs. More importantly, it allows the user to comfortably sit upright while still keeping their lower body inside the bag, making it possible to change clothes in stages from within the warmth and comfort of your bag. As any cold-weather camper will attest, this is a very welcome feature when the temperature drops!

The Golden Eagle is made in a tapered 'mummy' shape, keeping unused dead space to a minimum while avoiding the restrictive feeling so often associated with this style of sleeping bag. At the head is a roomy, full-size hood with internal drawstrings, allowing you to create as snug a fit as you desire. A fibre-filled baffle runs horizontally across the inside of the hood, providing extra support and insulation around your neck. A second internal baffle runs down the full-length of the central-zip, ensuring that your body does not come into direct contact with the zip while also keeping out any draughts, thus eliminating any unnecessary heat loss. An additional feature is the inclusion of two inner mesh pockets, placed either side of the central zip on the chest area. These zippered pockets are ideal for keeping your valuables hidden and protected.

The Golden Eagle comes with its own compression stuff sack, complete with a fabric tongue on the opening and a tough, sewn-in drawstring. As the name suggests, your sleeping bag is best packed when simply stuffed into the sack, rather than rolled, making packing easier. The Woodlore logo is proudly shown on the foot of both the stuff sack and the sleeping bag itself.

Warmth to weight on this bag is excellent. It can be compressed to a reasonable size to fit in a pack but does have some volume to be considered. The centre zip works perfectly with a centre zip bivvy and the inside mesh pockets have been positioned well to not interfere with me side sleeping.

This is my second Golden Eagle sleeping bag. My first lasted around 10 years and never failed to keep me toasty. The cut off the bag gives the sleeper room to move and the front zip is the most users friendly on todays market. A truly great value for money sleeping bag. I initially used mine in a hammock on a Ray Mears first aid course and found it to be the perfect combo. It was equally well suited to my one man Hilleberg Aston tent on several backpacking trips. Now age 69 the new Golden Eagle is a continuation for hopefully many more years of camping. Good work Woodlore team. Stay safe in the future.

Great bag, thick and warm pack size is not small but that's the compromise for warmth. I would recommend this bag for people that sleep cold and want to stay warm. The middle zip is much easier to use than a side zip. 5 stars.

Love this sleeping bag so far, very warm, well put together. The zip down the middle is a genius little tweak. For me I like to sleep on my side and perhaps read in the evening, having the front zip makes this a little more awkward, but its a small price to pay for being able to sit up in my tent in the morning and keep the lower part of my body warm. I would say it is quite a large bag, with a squeeze does just fit into the bottom of an ortlieb 60 litre dry bag. If i had to change anything I would maybe change the bag in which the sleeping bag is contained in. When you pull the straps to compress the bag, the string around the top of the bag tends to open up so you have to re-tighten it a few times. Not a problem really, but would make compressing it not only easier but more efficient.

Paid £260 for this bag and then was charged £6.50 TO HAVE IT DELIVERED. Enquired about the charge and it wasn't a mistake. Anywhere else if you spend £100 or more it would of been free delivery. Bad customer service.

Dear Steve Thank you for your review. Our postage charges vary depend on the value of the order. For free delivery the order would need to be £300.01 or more. Kind regards. Woodlore team.

I have used this for one night but the temperature only went down to 9 degrees so I was very toasty. I Had to unzip to cool off a little. The sleeping bag is of Great quality and love the zip on the top. I hope it is colder when I use it again. I am 6ft 6' so my feet are right at the bottom of the bag. I Really like the hood. Even without pulling the drawstring it fits around your head keeping you warm without a hat.

Incredibly warm and comfortable! I'm 62 & 17 stone so no lightweight, yet this bag is amply big enough both in terms of width and length. One word of caution though, this bag is bulky! To reduce its packed size I bought a Sea to Summit compression dry sack and, although this has worked better than the supplied stuff sack, it is still all but impossible to fit into my Karrimor Sabre 45 even with every clip, zip and toggle on maximum adjustment! (It does fit into my Sabre 75 though). Though I've used it very little so far I've yet to experience any zip issues but I've consciously been careful when zipping & unzipping the bag. Fast shipping from Woodlore as always.

Fast delivery. Super warm, although not entirely sure I would be comfortable in minus 22, and this is my only non-positive comment. Bulky, but it's not for hiking with. Seems to be of good quality commensurate with the price. I'm 62 and 16 stone and this is long enough and snug but not overly tight.

Great bag. Nice and warm, pretty large so loads of space to move around inside. My only grumbles are that the zip pull broke on first use and the stuff sack looks a little weak, but it has not let me down yet. Great bag for a great price.

Dear Lloyd, thank you for your review. As discussed in our previous correspondence with you, we would be more than happy to issue you with a brand new replacement sleeping bag if you wish, considering the fault with your zip pull. We take enormous pride in our sleeping bags, and this fault is most certainly an isolated one, and we would be happy to rectify this for you.

At just under 6' 5' I don't shop for what I want - just what I want from what will fit. That said, I narrowed down my choice to this sleeping bag - partly on the confidence I feel in the brand, partly the centre top zip (I often use a hammock) and the information I received from Customer Services as to length. It is a plain, well made bag. Fittings are of high quality and uncomplicated. Even the dreaded Velcro is arranged to minimise bother. I won't be using the bag for a while but thought I should comment on it to help taller customers. I was told the internal measurement was 7'. This reduces as you fill the width but both dimensions have proved perfect and seem to allow a much less constricted volume in which to get comfortable. The compromises on compression and weight suit me as I'm no lightweight and neither does my luggage tend to be. I was attempting to buy once and buy well - I'm happy that I have achieved this.
