The Ray Mears Osprey Sleeping Bag is a premium-quality 3-season synthetic sleeping bag, designed exclusively for Woodlore by Ray Mears.

The Osprey was primarily designed for use through late spring to early autumn in the UK. However, it is also suitable for use in colder regions, proving itself in laboratory tests to provide safe insulation at temperatures as low as -15°C. This model has been tested extensively for more than a decade in various environments around the world, and remains the summer bag of choice for both Ray Mears and the Woodlore team.

The Osprey contains a form of synthetic insulation known as Climashield Apex; an innovative fabric that is the most lightweight and thermally efficient continuous filament insulation on the market today. Climashield Apex provides durable warmth under harsh conditions, holding its original shape and properties no matter how many times your bag is compressed or washed.

All of our sleeping bags utilise a central-zip design; a simple feature which makes a huge difference in the field. Originally found in military sleeping bags, the central-zip makes getting in and out of the bag far easier than traditional side-zip designs. More importantly, it allows the user to comfortably sit upright while still keeping their lower body inside the bag, making it possible to change clothes in stages from within the warmth and comfort of your bag. As any cold-weather camper will attest, this is a very welcome feature when the temperature drops!

The Osprey is made in a tapered 'mummy' shape, keeping unused dead space to a minimum while avoiding the restrictive feeling so often associated with this style of sleeping bag. At the head is a roomy, full-size hood with internal drawstrings, allowing you to create as snug a fit as you desire. A fibre-filled baffle runs horizontally across the inside of the hood, providing extra support and insulation around your neck. A second internal baffle runs down the full-length of the central-zip, ensuring that your body does not come into direct contact with the zip while also keeping out any draughts, thus eliminating any unnecessary heat loss. An additional feature is the inclusion of two inner mesh pockets, placed either side of the central zip on the chest area. These zippered pockets are ideal for keeping your valuables hidden and protected.

The Osprey comes with its own compression stuff sack, complete with a fabric tongue on the opening and a tough, sewn-in drawstring. As the name suggests, your sleeping bag is best packed when simply stuffed into the sack, rather than rolled, making packing easier. The Woodlore logo is proudly shown on the foot of both the stuff sack and the sleeping bag itself.

I purchased this bag on the 16th of September 2020 and it has seen regular use over the last 3+ years. I was initially disappointed with the bag as the cord extenders on the zips came off with the first use. The centre zip opening is a good concept but the zip size means that it is prone to snagging on the material of the bag no matter how careful you are with it, this is frustrating and very inconvenient if you have to exit the bag at night! In terms of comfort I am 6ft 4” and I wouldn’t recommend buying this bag if you are any taller as it’s like being a sardine in a tin, it could definitely be more generous on the dimensions in my opinion. I have used the bag down to 0-2 degrees Celsius with several layers on underneath whilst on a Thermarest Prolite under a tarp and I personally consider this to be the bags comfort limit in terms of temperature, anything less would be pushing it in my opinion. All in all it’s a decent sleeping bag for the price and it is well made but there is definitely room for improvement, if the zip issue were resolved and the bag more generous in size then I would most certainly go for the upgrade.

I spent last night on a Lake District shoreline with stars above me and the Ray Mears Osprey sleeping bag for warmth. It was the backpacking equivalent to touring Europe in a Rolls Royce! This is my second Ray Mears bag, the first was a Canada Jay, which was lost in transit returning from Canada; so I knew when I bought this bag what to expect. Ray designs gear he wants to use and Ray Mears demands the best. The word that best describes a Ray Mears designed sleeping bag is 'elegant'. Nothing is there that doesn't need to be there, nothing is missing that should. There is a view amongst some that 'bivvying' needs to be hard, dour, miserable. Maybe it is without a really good sleeping bag. But Ray doesn't do miserable. From the central opening (How obvious! Why is this not standard?) to the luxurious lining (Softer than the sheets I have at home. Brushed nylon?). To the breakthrough 'Climashield Apex' filing (Warm from the moment you get in!) this is top-end outdoor living. Rough sleeping with a happy smile. If there's a better sleeping bag in the world, Its surely another one by Ray! Oh, did I mention I'm a vegan? The bag is totally animal free! No compromise! That's something else that is inescapable in describing the Osprey. No compromise! I love this bag.

Lovely sleeping bag, really warm and spacious. I found this bag is too warm for summer camping in the UK but perfect for early or late season. The bag is well made with quality materials and should last for many years. Great service and products from Woodlore. Thank you.

Very good bag and reliable when needed. Love the central zip; makes life a lot easier. There are however two drawbacks to this bag, one being the size; it's quite large but I will say manageable. The other being the weight at 1.5 kg. When in its stuff sack it's quite long; you can obviously compress it but it still leaves you with a relatively large lump. Like all outdoorsmen you get to a point when you say light is good but I'm fed up with waking in the middle of the night because I'm cold; that's why I got this bag so I know whatever God-awful weather the UK throws at me this bag can deal with it, hence that's why I also forgive the weight. It's a very robust bag, nice little pockets on the inside (useful for phone, passport), shoulder baffle is a very welcome feature that is new to me (I carry a summer bag most of the time). Plenty of room in the bag as well which is nice so you don't feel like you're being embalmed when you do up the zip. Overall if you don't mind the extra weight or a larger pack size and want a very reliable sleeping bag that won't let you down, I highly recommend this.

My wife and I bought two of these to replace our old bags and wanted something we could use all year round in the UK, and having just come back from an Easter weekend on Dartmoor under a tarp in cold and windy conditions we are very pleased with their performance; they kept us very warm and the central zip is much easier to use than a side one, so a really good sleeping bag and would recommend.

I bought the Osprey sleeping bag to complete the set from Woodlore. Using the mid-range bag in the summer months proved a tad warm to say the least (I know now what a dandelion root feels when nestled in the embers). When I lay out the Osprey next to the Golden Eagle one thing was obvious, the lofting on the new bag was far superior, even though when pinching the insulation together on both bags the Osprey was only slightly thinner. I've now used the Osprey twice in my hammock and both times it felt warm and cosy. The new bag seems well built and has a luxurious feel to it, I have seen some comments on the web that the Yeti bags are not as good as the Nanok but to be honest there is very little in it. The Yeti bag wins for me, purely because of the better lofting. Only time will tell as to the longevity of this sleeping bag. One of the most important things for me personally when spending time outdoors is a good night's sleep and this bag delivers on all fronts. Many thanks to Woodlore on another fabulous piece of kit.

Fantastic piece of kit. Used it up in the Cairngorms in October and couldnt be happier, The central zip was what sold this bag to me and I have no regrets allowing mush more flexibility and comfort. It is a mummy shape but not so much so that I feel my feet are suffocating and this is the same with the rest of the bag. Good draw-cord around the face to keep the warmth in and I had no problems down to around freezing. I would highly recommend this bag and am looking forward to my next night out in it in the woods!

The 3-season sleeping bag is fantastic. Lightweight, yet really warm. The centre zip is great - easy to get in and out of, so would thoroughly recommend this product.

Great quality bag. Very warm and comfy. Central zip works great without snagging. Packs down nice and small and overall is a vast improvement on my old bag. My girlfriend has a Carinthia Defence 4 and when compared side-by-side, the Osprey does seem better quality. Excellent service from the Woodlore team. Very happy.
