The Ray Mears Micro Froe is used for preparing wood while out in the field or at home. It is collapsible making it safe to store while not in use and it packs away neatly.

Each Micro Froe is hand-forged exclusively for Woodlore by the esteemed British blacksmith Andrew Kirkham. Andrew has produced a number of items for Ray and Woodlore over the years, including our Folding Griddles and Ray Mears Crooked Knives. We are very happy to collaborate with him once again.

In his own words Andrew said:

I’m very happy to be producing this micro froe for Woodlore. It’s made with portability in mind. The blade is heat treated EN9 steel, and the shaft is made from Ash with an oil finish. It is perfect for small splitting tasks.

Hmmm. I'm a little conflicted about this one. I usually use a combination of hatchet and mallet to split my wood but thought I might try this as an alternative. It is certainly beautifully made but and this is a key criticism or observation here, the wooden handle is simply not long enough to make the job pleasurably easy. I will keep it as an alternative but it will not be included in my pack when I go out and about. Woodlore's legendary service continues apace but I feel that this Micro Froe is a bit of a damp squib.

This is a curious piece for me. I’ve used larger froes for splitting and making shingles so I thought I might try this as a more portable alternative to an axe. It obviously needs a baton but that can be any reasonable chunk of wood. So far only used to make smaller splits for the fire and is very capable in that respect. I’m not sure how to use it for more craft applications, maybe a video on the Woodlore site would offer a few clues? It fits easily in my tool roll and is less conspicuous than an axe so has its niche especially in the UK where folks can be twitchy about blades.
