Live History, Not Just a Story
In February 1943, a small group of Norwegian saboteurs crossed the Hardangervidda plateau on skis. They carried everything they needed, with no resupply, no rescue, and no margin for error.
Their mission: destroy Nazi heavy-water production at Vemork an act that changed the course of World War II.
This incredible story inspired by the BBC series The Real Heroes of Telemark, presented by Ray Mears. While Ray will not be on The Heroes of Telemark expedition, the journey is guided by his philosophy and winter skills, giving the opportunity to experience the mindset, resilience, and ingenuity that made the original mission possible.
The Hardangervidda is one of Europe’s largest high-altitude plateaus, a vast wilderness where temperature plunge and visibility can become minimal in no time. Making the crossing on skis, whilst carrying your own kit, is to get a new-found appreciation for the bravery of the saboteurs. No amount of research will ever bring you close as experiencing the Heroes of Telemark Expedition for real.
You don’t need to be an expert skier to take part. The Heroes of Telemark Expedition begins with two to three days of dedicated ski training in the Setesdal Valley. Expert instructors will help complete beginners get up to standard needed for the journey. Everyone will be trained together; no one gets left behind.
To round off the Heroes of Telemark Expedition, you’ll take part of a re-enactment of Operation Gunnerside, the final raid. The unforgettable experience, having skied across the approach and living in similar conditions to the adventurers, will be one that changes your life. Past participants have described it as one of the most powerful journey’s they have ever taken.
