The Buffalo Mountain Shirt is a unique fleece-lined garment, designed as an all-in-one base-layer and outer jacket. It's perfect for various cold-weather activites, such as hill-walking, fishing, climbing, and trekking, as well as for general outdoor use.

Buffalo originated this one-layer system in the late 1970's, to replace the numerous layers often worn by climbers, fell runners and hill walkers in winter conditions. It comprises a lining of insulating pile fleece, with a functional and water-resistant shell outer, producing a garment that is completely windproof, lightweight and amazingly warm. It is also highly breathable and extremely efficient at transmitting moisture vapour.

As unconventional as it sounds, the Mountain Shirt is designed to work most efficiently when worn next to the skin. In this way, the pile fabric wicks moisture away from the skin more rapidly, where it is then dispersed by the Pertex to the external surface to evaporate and keep the body dry and free from chilling. Side zips have been fitted, not only allowing access, but to adjust for ventilation, enabling the user to regulate their body temperature on the move.

Sizing: Buffalo have designed the Mountain Shirt to be a very close-fitting garment, to ensure maximum performance. Strictly speaking, the looser the fit, the less performance you will get. We recommend you measure your chest when completely expanded, and choose your size using this measurement. The Mountain Shirt is a mid-length top, which finishes at the top of the thigh.

First of all, the order process was easy and the delivery speedy. The top is the second I have bought, but in a different colour. I am a big fan of them and I use it regularly when temperatures start to drop. I did read up on the top before I bought it and that is worth doing for such an investment.

Great colour, not quite waterproof but offers good breathability. Works best without anything on underneath, but ensure it has a tight fit. Use the straps to adjust otherwise can feel a little cold for colder people. Others I know found it enough.

Fantastic jacket, though the weather is getting a bit too warm for it now so looking forward to wearing it much more in Autumn and Winter. The zips are great for ventilation though, plenty of opportunity to get a bit of cool air circulating through. The pockets - both the hand one and the large front one are great, so there is no need for gloves in cooler weather and there is lots of room for a map, keys, etc in the front chest pocket. Great price, significantly lower than other retailers, I'm very happy.

A replacement for old mountain shirt which was 14 years old, it's identical to the old shirt except the central hand pocket has now a sort of grippy rubberised material on the body side inside. I was a motorcycle dispatch rider for 32 years and used the mountain shirt under my motorcycle suit. In the upper map pocket of the mountain shirt I would keep a decent quality torch switched on next to my heart for added warmth. The buffalo Pertex material would also handle any ingress of rainwater from the outer motorcycle jacket, it was a real lifesaver over each winter 5 days a week for 14 years. I'm retired now so splashed out on this new one for walking and hiking. I love its light weight, best worn directly next to the skin however it's ok to wear a T shirt under for prudence as the day warms up. All in all I think the Buffalo is an investment, rain resistant and I have been soaked totally but it's not the end of the world as it seems to dry out as you walk.

A stalwart classic, bombproof and reliable product. If only it packed down smaller it would be perfect. I went for the 48 inch chest, which is quite big, I generally tend to size up with outdoor kit, I could have got away with the 46, so my advice would be order true to size, as its long in the body and arms. Its also noted that this is on sale for significantly more money on other sites. Very happy with the cost, the service and the delivery times. Thank you RayMears.com

Top quality piece of kit. I've been looking at this for a while and finally took the plunge and haven't regretted it. Haven't worn it next to my skin yet but great as a final layer. Best price found on this site and I am a big fan of Ray so a it is a result all round. It is expensive but worth the money in my opinion and will last for years I'm sure.

Buffalo systems mountain shirt is superb. I wear mine against my skin but sometimes with a thermal base layer depending on the temperature and what I am doing but it keeps me warm and dry. The ventilation zips are great to cool off a little if needed. Like all of the kit I have bought from Ray’s Woodlore site it’s top notch and by being on the site has already passed the sniff test. The order arrived the very next day too so excellent customer service.
