Osprey NATO Water Bottle

Osprey NATO Water Bottle

£9.00

Brand: Osprey
Weight: 214 g         88 reviews
The Osprey NATO Water Bottle is a classic piece of outdoor equipment, having been standard issue to the British Army for many decades. It holds 1 litre of water and is made of a rigid black plastic that will not split or break like other imitation bottles on the market.

As part of the NATO system, the Osprey Water Bottle is designed to sit inside the BCB NATO Crusader Cup, helping to save space in your rucksack. These two items then fit perfectly inside the camouflage NATO Water Bottle Cover, which can be attached to your belt.

This heavy duty water bottle features a seal in the lid to prevent leakage, while the lid is permanently attached to save you losing it. When purifying collected water with chemicals, the black plastic of the Osprey Water Bottle prevents light from affecting the purification process, making this a safer choice.

Bombproof, easy to grab (more useful than you'd imagine) Holds loads of h2o. It's a classic. Mine did stink of plastic something horrible when I got it as some people have mentioned. Strong dishwasher tablet solution followed by vinegar and bicarb sorted that out (inverted in a mug with the cap loosely screwed on to wash the seal). Fingers crossed it's worked long term. Time will tell. You'll struggle to break it unless you get it too hot, but you'd have to be a numpty and you don't deserve one.

This is my second water bottle. Unfortunately, I lost the first one in an accident. Because of the good quality and size I wanted a new Osprey Water Bottle.

I bought this around three years ago and have used it on every outing, never leaving my side. It's very tough, ergonomically perfect, very well designed and made. One of my most trusted piece of kit, we've become very close friends. As well as fitting into pouches on my backpacks it sits snug and comfy when attached to my to my belt with a carabiner - really nice when just walking about or doing thirsty work. The shape allows for the bottle to sit upright without moving or blowing around (weather dependant) so easy to fill up from dripping mountains, for example. Just when you think a bottle couldn't do anymore, you realise the flattened side allows for easy collecting from a shallow stream or surface. The accompanying crusader cup is also excellent. I use this everyday and have zero issues, only compliments. And for only £9.00

Fantastic bottle. Strong, no leaks and it fits in the binocular pocket of my Swazi Tahr perfectly.

Does exactly what it says. Durable, holds a little over a litre (1150ml). The rim tastes a little rubbery sometimes, but not really a problem, especially if you flavour the water with a drop of juice

Not getting any weird taste from the rubber seal, though it does leave a bit of a smell around the rim the water is unaffected. As expected the unit sold here is the genuine article, no leaks or anything. It's not impossible to get a defective unit, but in my case the one I have is fine. Ordered it with the BCB NATO Crusader Cup, and well, if you try and fit the bottle into the cup upright then it takes a huge effort to push the bottle in, and then even more to remove it, not sure if other people are getting such a crazy tight fit on this combo, but it's a bit annoying, leaves traces of black bottle plastic on the metal cup, This isn't that much of a problem as I have a webbing/belt pouch that seems to be for holding this sort of bottle and cup and I can simply sit the bottle into the cup with the lid facing down, no leaks, no struggle.

I did so want to love this. It's well made, solid and easy to empty and fill, but after around 100 changes of water, umpteen overnight steepings with Bicarb (about 6 times) and Vinegar (a couple of times) removal of the seal and treating that with Vinegar, Bicarb and multiple changes of boiled water. It still hasn't leaked, but it DOES have the most awful plastic taste. I think I have narrowed it down to the rubber seal actually, but I can't be sure. Anyway, its not much use without the seal, is it? I just can't abide the taste to be honest and so consequently my Osprey is now filed away somewhere where I won't have to use it again. Imagine you're in the Highlands and have filtered some spare water to keep in your Osprey, you walk a bunch of miles get thirsty and look forward to some lovely fresh tasting water and then you get something which tastes of plastics and the modern world. Not very nice at all (well, it isn't to me). I know its BPA-free etc, but all the same, you'd think someone would have designed something as bomb-proof that didn't taste like a £3 Chinese kettle. But wait a minute, the stupid thing is Avon (who make the Dutch Army bottle) have. Theirs doesn't use a rubber bung and I've found the Dutch bottles to be utterly tasteless, so it can be done. The only reason I changed over was having lent my old Dutch bottle to my son on a permanent basis I fancied a change and had an Osprey sized pouch, hence the purchase. Am I stupid to think that if a number of people shouted loudly enough about this things could change? It's a damn good design - just improve it! I mean, a billion Nalgene users can't be wrong, can they? Kudos to Woodlore for great service as always, and I really hate to moan - maybe I got a bad one. I just don't know any more.

Woodlore's Reply - 3rd August, 2017
Dear Phil, Thank you for your review. I am sorry you seem to be experiencing a strange taste from the water bottle, this may be specific to some bottles only. A previous customer has done the same as you with some success. Hopefully over a period of time the taste will dissipate.
