Maybe I was using it wrong, but the carbide side of this sharpener seems a little too brutal. Or unrefined. I don't doubt it does the job, but left a bit of a rough edge on my blade- there was a definite notch which I had to use another knife sharpener I have to remove. The ceramic side has more finesse. That said, it is very compact and, like I said, I don't doubt it will make a sharp edge, so I'd certainly keep it on me when out and about in case I needed it. Perhaps I will try and find more tips on how best to use it before I need to though.

Dear James. Thank you for your review on the RWS Quick-Sharp Knife Sharpener. The ceramic side is very coarse and needs to be used very carefully. By using lots of pressure, material will be taken quickly from the blade. At the same time if there are irregularities along the bladed edge, the sharpener will magnify the imperfection further. The sharpener is also designed to be used on knives with a small bevel only.
