The humble Fire Stick is, without a doubt, one of the most fundamental and reliable pieces of Bushcraft equipment available. As used by Ray Mears and the entire Woodlore team for well over a decade, the Fire Stick (or ferrocerium rod, as it is also known) is favoured in Bushcraft and survival situations due to the fact that it can be used even when wet. When used properly, the Fire Stick will produce a shower of sparks which will light your tinder of choice with ease.

Employing the same design and function as our standard Fire Sticks, these rods differ in that they are sold without handles, allowing you to manufacture your own. Antler and curly birch are firm favourites for making handles out of, but there's no reason not to venture out and try different materials; indeed, as you can see on the Woodlore Blog, some customers have even made fire stick handles from Gumnuts! Ideal for those who are new to woodworking, and a great gift to anyone interested in getting hands-on with their bushcraft kit.

Good quality fire steel and I think it's a great idea to be able to make your own handle and then reuse it with another steel.

Impressive stuff. The first time I have used a firestick. Scrape with the back of your knife and the sparks fly with ease. Yet to try in wet weather, but confident it'll work fine there too.

This is the best flint that I have used, the spark is bright, it can light many kinds of tinder easily.

I have purchased several of these over a couple of years, I know it sounds corny but they are far and away the best ones I've used. I will qualify that by saying it is very easy to get good, strong sparks with a controlled, short strike, getting the sparks exactly where you want or need them is very easy without disturbing your carefully prepared tinder. My personal striker of choice is a carbide scraper blade, but these work well with any decent square edge - it's fun to try and see just how short a 'strike stroke' you can use to get tinder going (1/4 inch (or 6.35mm) is what I'm getting (on a good day). Slow, short, firm strike - so much better than scraping away like a thing possessed with sparks going all over the place - I really like these and can't recommend them enough!

Works great. Good size. I have fitted it to a bit of antler for a handle. Makes good sparks when used with a good edge.

As expected, this is a quality product. Throws out a good shower of sparks (unlike some others i have used). I Mounted it on a Reindeer antler for my good lady and she loves it.

I've been searching for a decent blank Ferro rod for a while now. Reading reviews and looking for feedback from various forums but nothing was ticking all the boxes. I have looked at various alternatives available from major 'Outdoor' shops but I was always disappointed with the performance of these rods. What I wanted was something to match the performance of my first Ferro rod which I purchased some 11 years ago on the recommendation of one of Ray's first instructors while I was on a course in the Lake District. I don't know why I didn't come here in the first place given the history of my old rod but I am glad I have now. This rod is exactly the same as my old one and generates the same intense shower of sparks for only a small amount of effort. The rod is now sporting a yew handle and I am even considering purchasing a few more of these for my Cub Scout group as they are far superior to anything else I have seen.

This fire stick is a great tool, lots of hot sparks. I've purchased the rod version so I can have a go at personalising a handle.
