British Woodland is an interesting and informative story of our involvement with trees.

Nobody sees and understands woodland better than Ray Mears.

With deep natural history knowledge and practical woodcraft skills, gained over a lifetime of learning from the world's last remaining indigenous peoples, Ray offers a different way to experience our wooded landscapes. He challenges the old concepts. He looks to our ancestors and shows how man's hand in shaping woodland is critical. We are not separate from nature, we just need to ensure that our interactions have a positive impact.

With the emphasis on interaction, British Woodland is structured by usage. We learn that sycamore and clematis are among the best woods for burning, pine and oak help us navigate, and hawthorn and beech have edible leaves. Rope can be made from willow, utensils and tools from hazel, and historically, weapons were made from yew and wych elm.

With Ray as our guide, encouraging this aboriginal sense of connection to individual trees, our appreciation of wooded landscapes will change. We can learn how to live inclusively in nature, for our own wellbeing and enjoyment, and also for the future of our planet.

A great book on British woodland, not only for its attractive presentation or its quality images; nor the lovely little blurbs on different British tree species or its safe tips on wild edibles. It is British Woodland, but related through the eyes of a person highly-skilled in Wilderness Bushcraft, and therefore, always threads of bushcraft but also history are woven into the text in a delightful and satisfying way.

Ray has written this book in such a way that even being dyslexic I have been able to glean knowledge and enjoy the book. Thanks Ray

Very readable but does require multiple passes in my opinion due to Ray’s knowledge packed style. The text is well supported with illustrations and colour plates and I particularly liked the tree by tree approach which turns the book into a very usable study guide. Yet another rich, fascinating and entertaining work - highly recommend as it definitely hits the standard I’ve come to expect from Ray’s writing.

What I have always loved about Ray and his work is his connection to nature; he seems to work with nature, he doesn't fight it but instead coaxes it into cooperation. This book is very much a part of this approach. It is informative, well written and fascinating while remaining accessible and useful. Everything is presented in a way that encourages the reader to cooperate with the woodland so that both can thrive. It is easy to dip in and out of (I opened it at random and started reading about the Alder) and while on the one hand could be seen as a guide to living wild is really more a way of educating the reader in the 'way of the woods' and to help us appreciate their value and beauty.
