British Woodland is an interesting and informative story of our involvement with trees.

Nobody sees and understands woodland better than Ray Mears.

With deep natural history knowledge and practical woodcraft skills, gained over a lifetime of learning from the world's last remaining indigenous peoples, Ray offers a different way to experience our wooded landscapes. He challenges the old concepts. He looks to our ancestors and shows how man's hand in shaping woodland is critical. We are not separate from nature, we just need to ensure that our interactions have a positive impact.

With the emphasis on interaction, British Woodland is structured by usage. We learn that sycamore and clematis are among the best woods for burning, pine and oak help us navigate, and hawthorn and beech have edible leaves. Rope can be made from willow, utensils and tools from hazel, and historically, weapons were made from yew and wych elm.

With Ray as our guide, encouraging this aboriginal sense of connection to individual trees, our appreciation of wooded landscapes will change. We can learn how to live inclusively in nature, for our own wellbeing and enjoyment, and also for the future of our planet.

What a wonderful book! I'm so happy I could cry! See the lush meadows, brooks and streams. Look upon the magnificent English oaks standing witness since before the days of Robin Hood. The British wildlife in all its majesty and everything around us is telling us we are all connected to nature - if only we would take a few moments to listen. There is nothing like British Woodland anywhere in the world but England? - all of this and more in this incredible book. Ray Mears looks back with reverence to our ancestors and our surviving modern aboriginal friends. He takes us through an epic journey from the end of the last ice age through modern times. He shows us what it must have been like to survive and thrive even in those difficult times. He walks us through all of the different types of trees and vegetation and their usage - even fungus! Mr. Mears' writing style is wonderfully open, clear and articulate. Everything about the book is well done and very thoughtful. He uses recycled paper (an off-white stock) with a serif font for a pleasurable, easy read. The book is printed and bound in Great Britain. When was the last time you picked up something that said "Made in England" on it? All of the pictures (and there are many), were taken by Ray Mears (no kidding) and they are beautiful!!! Even the close-up macro shots are by Ray. The layout is beautiful. Everything is carefully diagrammed and arranged so carefully. On the front page is a dedication to his wife Ruth - lovely. And, I feel so lucky to get a signed edition! This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend getting a hardback copy edition if you are able. It's something you can re-read over and over and treasure for the rest of your life.

A great book on British woodland, not only for its attractive presentation or its quality images; nor the lovely little blurbs on different British tree species or its safe tips on wild edibles. It is British Woodland, but related through the eyes of a person highly-skilled in Wilderness Bushcraft, and therefore, always threads of bushcraft but also history are woven into the text in a delightful and satisfying way.

Very readable but does require multiple passes in my opinion due to Ray’s knowledge packed style. The text is well supported with illustrations and colour plates and I particularly liked the tree by tree approach which turns the book into a very usable study guide. Yet another rich, fascinating and entertaining work - highly recommend as it definitely hits the standard I’ve come to expect from Ray’s writing.
