The Savotta Saddle Sack 323 is a classic retro backpack for a hunter; the design has remained unchanged since the 1950's. After making something that works, why fix the design if it is not broken! Just as great for hunting, camping and the city today as it was 60 years ago.

Due to its size, the 323 is ideal for one or two day hunting trips: the backpack holds the necessary overnight equipment, provisions and other useful gadgets and tools comfortably. Once upon a time when men were made of steel and women as tough as nails, you could survive for weeks just with the saddle sack (or months, if you ask remote patrollers who served in wars), sleeping in the wilderness and eating what nature has to offer. Although the needs of a modern camper are different, a good backpack design is still a good backpack design. The traditional saddle sack is as fine a carrying device as it ever was, and it has the sort of a romantic retro vibe that you just cannot find in contemporary backpacks.

The main compartment of the bag (dimensions approximately 45 x 35 x 25 cm) is closed by tightening the drawstring opening, which is covered with a flap that can be secured with leather straps. The straps are long enough to attach, for example, a rolled sleeping mat or blanket under the flap. If necessary, additional detachable straps can be used to lengthen the straps. The size of the main compartment of the backpack is large enough to fit even a heavy winter sleeping bag inside.

The side pockets (dimensions approximately 33 x 10 x 6 cm) are closed with fitted flaps with good coverage and secured with leather straps. The side pockets are ideal for packing large Thermos flasks and other cumbersome, long supplies.

The back pocket (dimensions approximately 20 x 30 x 6 cm) is closed with a flap equipped with two leather straps. You can pack plenty of small supplies into the generously sized outer pocket for quick and easy access.

There are attachment loops on the sides of the opening for detachable straps. By using straps, it is possible to attach long rolls, such as a blanket or a sleeping mat, securely on top of the bag. You can then ensure sturdy attachment by closing the flap of the bag over the roll.

A special feature of the saddle sack is its steel pipe frame which enables steady and comfortable carrying. The sturdy frame holds the bag firmly in shape and the horizontal leather strap stretched across the lower part of the frame sits comfortably against your lower back, keeping the bag itself from touching your back. The shoulder straps are wide leather straps, the length of which can be adjusted with buckles. Because of the steel pipe frame, it is much more comfortable to carry the saddle sack than a frameless backpack, particularly over long distances and with a heavy load.

The older I get the more I am starting to lean towards more traditional/vintage looking clothing. Shamefully I had not heard of Savotta before I visited this site but I wouldn't have much hesitation in purchasing there products again. It has a steel pipe frame that helps hold the rucksack firmly in shape and position. It has become my new work bag and after a brief downpour the paraffin treated cotton made the water bead up on the material and didn't absorb it. The narrow side compartments are able to hold a Contigo travel coffee cup. The heavy duty material makes me think should you so desire you could carry a rucksack of bricks quite comfortably. The leather straps are a nice detail and contrast well against the military olive green. A five year guarantee against defects gives you piece of mind and although it isn't necessarily cheap I do believe the price is reasonable. Although not massive it probably is a little big for a day pack but I make do. Similar to German made boots, Scandinavian made and designed products are usually of good quality and I would recommend this product.

I had been thinking about pulling the trigger on this pack for some time. I'm so glad I did now, utterly bombproof and comfortable too, it doesn't compare to a modern style of pack but then again you couldn't subject a nylon rucksack to the abuse you can with this, bricks? No problem. Excellent service as ever from Woodlore, very happy with the pack. Jimmy.

I was looking for a smaller pack to carry the essentials for overnight camps and this Alpine (ish) design caught my eye as being the one for the job. I am still in the stages of packing and repacking everything as different packs have an annoying habit of telling you what doesn't fit where, but so far I have managed to get everything in it I need. This includes the sleep system, inflating mat, billy can and cup with wood burning stove. All this fits in the main section of the bag. Fuel and water bottles fit in the side pouches. Be warned these pockets have very narrow openings so a standard black plastic bottle will not go in. The front pouch is surprisingly large with more than enough room for a large possibles bag and my first aid kit. The overall quality of the bag is sound. A simple 'no frills' pack that looks as though it'll stand the test of time with a bit of maintenance. (Leather straps all round will no doubt benefit from a bit of saddle soap. Very pleased I bought it and the price here is the lowest I've seen.

Just what I needed to fill the gap between my smaller sacs and my larger ones. There may be more comfortable sacs out there but this is comfortable enough and the retro design just oozes quality and tradition. Great piece of kit.
