Bivy Bags

Bivi Bag (click to zoom) A bivy bag, bivouac, bivi, or bivy sack is a lightweight alternative to traditional tent systems. It is essentially a waterproof fabric shell designed to fit over your sleeping bag. It acts as a barrier against the wind and rain and provides extra insulation. Good bivy bags consist of Gore-Tex and are breathable, allowing humidity to pass and so reducing moisture inside for the occupant.

A bivy bag is included on some Woodlore kit lists because there will be some nights during the course where you sleep in a shelter or under a hootchie instead of your tent and you will need the added protection that a bivy bag provides.

For Woodlore courses a standard British Army surplus bivy bag will be fine. Please check out your nearest Army Surplus shop for stock. Please note though, the bivy bag should be a breathable Gore-Tex bag.
