How to use a Fire Stick

How to use a Ray Mears Fire Stick (click to zoom) The Fire Stick is an excellent tool that many of you will no doubt be familiar with through Ray's programmes. The most efficient way of using it, along with other fire lighting techniques, are taught on a number Woodlore's Bushcraft Courses.

The Fire Stick can be used with either the metal striker which comes attached to it, or with the back of your knife (the example below uses the attched striker):
  • Collect a small pile of tinder and place the end of your fire steel at the edge of it, aimed into the pile

  • Hold the striker tightly between your thumb and forefinger

  • Using the last 2cm of the steel, scrape hard using your striker, pulling the steel back against the striker

  • If done correctly, sparks falling onto your tinder will ignite it!
You can use many different types of tinder to do this; in particular we would recommend Birch bark peelings, feather sticks of Willow, Spruce, and Cedar, all plant downs, dry grasses, shredded bark, tinder fungi or The Tinderstick.
