S Djarv Hantverk - Traditional Woodcarving Tools
The following text was kindly provided by Elsa Djärv, one of the founding partners of S. Djärv Hantverk AB: Svante and Elsa Djärv, along with Svante's father, Kalle Djärv, started S. Djärv Hantverk AB in 1989. Svante is the blacksmith. He forges and sharpens all the tools. He has the important knowledge about the quality of the steel and the heat treatment. Svante's father Kalle made the machines and tools to help in the forging, sharpening and handle production stages. Elsa takes care of the handle production, as well as the administration and marketing. She also prepares the steel before the forging takes place by cutting, drilling and turning it.
All of the steel used to make their tools is bought as a round or flat pole, or in a steel sheet. The handle is made of elm and ash. They are bought as planks.
Svante has been educated as a model carpenter. His father was a tool manufacturer, so Svante's interest in handicraft began at home, and also from his grandfather who was a carpenter and woodworker.
Svante worked as an educated model carpenter at Chalmers in Gothenburg, before starting at another school at Sjöviks Folkhögskola in Dalarna, Sweden, where he learnt about outdoor life. It was there that his interest in handicraft increased. He was making spoons, bowls, dishes and troughs, while also learning sculpturing and turning.
Svante wanted to have tools made from good quality steel. He found some on the market that were good, but wanted to see if he could make some by himself. He wanted to form them after his own needs. He bought forging tools 1987 and began by forging knife blades and an axe. Svante then realized that his interest in forging could become more than just an interest. So, together with Elsa and Kalle, the company could become a reality. The first tools to be sold were a knife blade and spoon knife. A new smithy was built in 1992, and soon the garage, which housed the carpentry work, became too small to work in. In 1994, a brand new workshop was built.
Today Svante and Elsa work full-time at S. Djärv Hantverk AB, manufacturing smiths tools for woodcarving. Around 4,000 tools are forged every year for sale, both in Sweden and abroad.
A number of Svante and Elsa's beautiful hand-forged tools can be found in the Woodcarving Tools section of our Online Shop.
