This particular field guide comes highly recommended by Ray Mears, following extensive use in the field. It is especially useful reading for those attending our Tracking in Namibia course, as well as anyone partaking in a safari in southern or eastern Africa.
This field guide offers a different approach to animal identification than other books; it allows you first to look at the track or sign and then, by means of keys, determine the animal group or species responsible for what you see. The keys refer you to detailed descriptions and illustrations, and the book is arranged to enable quick identification.
The authors, Chris and Tilde Stuart, are well known for the quality of their research in the books they have written. As founders of the African-Arabian Wildlife Research Centre and the African Carnivore Research Programme, Chris and Mathilde Stuart work in the fields of biodiversity surveying, travel, photography and filming. A field ecologist and medical doctor respectively, they have written numerous books including the Field Guide to the Mammals of Southern Africa, as well as various scientific papers and popular articles on a wide range of topics.
