The Buffalo Mountain Shirt is an over-the-head, fleece-lined garment, designed as an all-in-one base-layer and outer jacket. It's perfect for various cold-weather activites, such as hill-walking, fishing, climbing, and trekking, as well as for general outdoor winter use.
What makes the Mountain Shirt special is its combination of a fleece lining teamed with a functional shell outer. Buffalo originated this one-layer system in the late 1970's, when it was originally designed to replace the numerous layers often worn by climbers, fell runners and hill walkers in winter conditions. It comprises a lining of 'Aqua Therm' pile fleece, with a Pertex 5 shell outer, producing a garment that is completely windproof, warm, lightweight and water-resistant. It is also highly breathable and extremely efficient at transmitting moisture vapour. This all adds up to create something much more functional and versatile than your average fleece.
The Mountain Shirt is designed to work most efficiently when worn next to the skin. In this way, the pile fabric wicks moisture away from the skin more rapidly, where it is then dispersed by the Pertex to the external surface to evaporate and keep the body dry and free from chilling. Side zips have been fitted as "an essential feature", not only allowing access, but to adjust for ventilation, enabling the user to regulate their body temperature.

Sizing: Buffalo have designed the Mountain Shirt to be a very close-fitting garment, to ensure maximum performance. Strictly speaking, the looser the fit, the less performance you will get. We recommend you measure your chest when completely expanded, and choose your size using this measurement. The Mountain Shirt is a mid-length top, which finishes at the top of the thigh.

I can not recommend this item highly enough. I was a bit sceptical when the description said it is to be worn next to the skin, as I was always previously told that layers were important when mountain hiking. The fit is tight but comfortable; the side zips allow you to regulate your temperature with ease as there are two zips on either side. Plenty of pocketspace for small items/maps etc. I was hiking in approx 80km/hr winds with air temperatures of 2 degreee centigrade, and this was always comfortable as I also had the Buffalo Hood. This is a superb jacket for any outdoor use.
