An uncommonly simple, ultra-light, and highly versatile group shelter
Originally developed as an ultra-light group-gathering shelter for the winter trips Hilleberg run for their retailers and staff, the yurt-inspired Altai Tent is simply an outstanding choice for anyone needing a large shelter solution where low weight is of the highest priority. Its simple, single-wall design, very light weight and roomy interior make it an excellent addition to other tents or as the sole shelter on any trip.
The Altai utilises a centre pole-plus-sidewall-support design, providing full standing height in the middle and full sitting height along the side walls; so, while it sleeps 6 or more, the Altai can readily seat 12 or more around its perimeter.
Easily light enough to be carried in addition to other tents, the Altai is essential equipment for tour operators, guides, wilderness course leaders and other professional users who need a standalone 'out building' for first aid, dining, briefing/classroom sessions, or even a larger, dedicated sleeping area. Ski tourers will also find the Altai the perfect choice, as foot wells and sleeping platforms can be dug into the snow, with snow flaps keeping the walls firmly in place.
However, the Altai is just as well-suited to more 'regular' users; its simplicity and space-to-weight ratio make it an excellent choice for Scouts, and, for paddle or cycle tours, it offers plenty of room to store or work on your gear out of the elements. Likewise, because of its remarkably low weight, a small group – even a couple – will find the Altai convenient, comfortable and palatial on any trip in any season!
The Altai is most suited to use below the tree-line and in more protected terrain, but it will easily withstand harsh weather conditions all year round. Made from Hilleberg's Kerlon SP material - an exceptionally stout polyester fabric boasting a minimum tear strength of 15 kilos - the Altai XP is the ideal choice for more demanding trips, as its fabric is stronger than that of the Altai UL model.
The Altai XP Complete comes with 1 centre Tarp Pole and 8 sidewall poles; however, these can be substituted for skis and trekking poles respectively. This option, along with the alternative of suspending the centre and sidewalls from above, makes the Altai highly adaptable to any trip or terrain.
