The latest addition to the Swazi/Ray Mears clothing range is the brand new Narwhal GORE-TEX Anorak. It has long been Woodlore’s aim to sell a lightweight, packable jacket that can still hold up to the elements, and we feel this exciting new Swazi model hits the spot.

Made from tough 2-Layer GORE-TEX PacLite fabric, this jacket is, of course, fully waterproof, windproof and breathable, yet weighs in at far less than traditional all-weather jackets, making it perfect for light backpacking, trekking and even day-to-day wear around town. The Narwhal is also ideal for running, cycling, cross-country skiing, all-season mountaineering, and other sports where weight and space are critical.

Just like the Swazi Tahr Anorak, the Narwhal incorporates Swazi's legendary hood design. As well as the adjustabale wire frame, two elasticated draw cords have been added, offering unrivalled protection from the elements.

The Narwhal Anorak features a long cut, keeping your backside covered. Draw cords are fitted at both the waist and the hem of the jacket, allowing you to create a snug fit, while the cuffs feature Velcro-adjustable tabs.

The chest panel features the subtle Swazi Clothing and Ray Mears Snowshoe logos, either side of a sealed, waterproof YKK zip. Two large, side-access pockets are strategically placed either side of the zip, each big enough for maps, radios or GPS, yet are designed to sit completely flat and out of sight when not in use.

A superb piece of kit that offers full protection from the weather without weighing you down; great for chucking in your rucksack when you head out for the day.

Key advantages of GORE-TEX PacLite Shell fabric:

  • Combines extreme breathability and durable wind- and waterproofness with minimum weight and size
  • Protective layer on the membrane makes a separate, inner lining unnecessary
  • Packable and versatile
  • Weight: 500 g in size Large
Colour: Sage Green/Black

GORE-TEX performs at its best when cleaned and cared for regularly. Woodlore recommend Nikwax Tech Wash and Nikwax TX. Direct for care of this garment.

More information on the properties of GORE-TEX clothing can be found in our Bushcraft Tips and Advice section. While GORE-TEX is perfect for use in extreme outdoor conditions, it is not indestructible - care should always be taken around fires, thorns and brambles. Woodlore recommend reading the care instruction label before use.

Average rating: 95%

This one is light in weight but no lightweight. The anorak style sheds rain and wind easily and affords easy temperature regulation via the hem drawcord and zip. It is very well made and comfortable to wear, whether enjoying the savagery of a hillside downpour or shedding a shower in the woods. My only criticisms come from the velcro closures on the chest-mounted pockets - they are annoyingly adept at catching the velcro cuff closures - and the hood which, while being pretty good, does not offer quite the flexibility and adjustment of some other British brands out there. Because of the cut of the anorak, you might find that it gapes a little when you are wearing it with the zip fully open. This is a minor inconvenience which could become a little wearing with more extended use. Minor gripes then but overall this is an excellent top and I remain surprised and delighted at its versatility.

Very light weight and very good construction quality. The anorak sounds a little loud when being handled but very little noise is heard when walking about. I'm sure this piece of kit will help me get through my first Scottish winter. Thanks very much Woodlore team.

I have read numerous reviews on other sites about this garment. Most have been positive with negative comments limited to cost. I have compared prices with the Swazi site and, once VAT and shipping charges are added, the Woodlore version works out cheaper. I have now used the Narwhal on Jura whilst completing Bird Surveys and the whole garment passes muster, even in horizontal rain. I am a fan of headover garments, although some aren't, and can highly recommend the Narwhal; I remained dry throughout and, on return to the hotel, managed to dry it quickly. The side pockets hold a GPS and 1:25000 map with ease and if I had wanted to, a pair of binoculars would have fitted with no issues. This is a highly recommended jacket - a cheaper and perhaps more acceptable alternative to the Tahr and it will be a useful addition to my ever growing outdoor kitbag. As with all Goretex products not best by a fire!

The new Swazi Narwhal Anorak certainly is a real doozy of a jacket. It'll work just as hard as you when your out on the slopes in winter. It keeps the wet stuff out and the warm stuff in and with its long cut design you not only get further protection but the jacket doesn't ride up every time you finish a run. Far outperforms anything else I have ever used on the mountain. Best thing is it doubles as a superior lightweight rain jacket for the bush. A must-have for any snow mad clansman who likes to stay dry.
