As used by Ray in the new Northern Wilderness series, these steel awls are designed for making holes in tough materials such as canvas, birch bark and leather, ready for stitching. The awl is a tool still commonly in use with leatherworkers and cobblers today.

Based on traditional designs found as far back as the late 1700s, Ray employed the craftsmanship of esteemed British blacksmith Andrew Kirkham to create these updated versions of this Canadian tool. Andrew has produced a number of items for Ray and Woodlore over the years, including our Steel Strikers and Canadian Steel Strikers.

The zigzag shape of these awls was first introduced to overcome a problem with the handles, where the wood or bone handles of straight awls tended to split under pressure. The crooked design seen here was used to anchor the awls firmly in their handles, and was common among those found at British-era sites in Canada.

These steel awls are sold on their own, ready to be fitted with their own custom handle, allowing you to create a truly unique tool.

Fantastic bit of kit! I've been looking around for a traditional awl, preferably with squared sides. This fits the bill perfectly. Its also beautifully made too. It was a pleasure to make a handle to fit my own hand too, a nice touch and a good way to bond with a tool I'll be using for a long time. Its also strong, after I fitted a handle I tested it out on a old bit of 2x4 pine and went through it with ease.
