Undoubtedly my 'go to' hatchet for woodland camping & general small jobs in the garden. Great for smaller splitting jobs, bark stripping, whittling, shavings etc. Compact & reasonably lightweight. Great quality head, handle & fit. Nicely weighted for one hand working. It won't fell any large trees of course, but it makes pretty short work of smaller ones. Very sharp & tough edge. 10/10.

Razor sharp still. I put boiled linseed oil on mine. Still look beautiful 5 years later. I put Nikwax on the leather cover too.

Shipped quickly and bought at a very reasonable price. I was surprised by how fast I received the item. It is a perfect axe for slapping on my rucksack and heading into the woods. Works great for splitting smaller logs and taking off branches, and is light enough to not feel cumbersome. While you 'could' take down larger trees with some effort , it is better suited for smaller jobs you would encounter around a campsite. The axe comes razor sharp and ready to be used and abused, and judging by its quality will withstand years of abuse.

One of the most popular axes in the Gransfors Bruks range, made more exclusive by the Ray Mears branding. The head is outstanding, as would be expected from any Gransfors axe. Curiously the very top and bottom points of the cutting edge have been ground off, which I haven't seen before. This has however stopped the axe from cutting through the sheath, which seems to be a common issue with Gransfors axes. Axe head to handle fitting seems very tight. The handle length to head weight ratio seem perfect. The handle came quite rough, but easily remedied with a light sanding and several coats of boiled linseed oil. Handle grain is tight and straight. Fast delivery, as always with Woodlore. Very happy with this purchase.

This is a beautifully crafted axe, very pleased with it. Buy once, look after it and it will last a lifetime.

I really like the Small Forest Axe. It was razor sharp straight out the box and the quality was obvious straight away. I have used it for splitting, limbing, carving walking sticks, preparing kindling and even tried some feather sticks. It's so versatile and can easily be used one handed or two. If I had to choose only one axe it would be the Small Forest.

Used this axe during a 'carving with Ray' experience. I ordered my own as soon as I got home and received a fantastic quality axe within a couple of days. Not had chance to do any more carving yet but hope to spend many quiet hours in the country with this axe.
It arrived sharp enough to get going and lightly oiled. In accordance with Ray's recommendation I'll be removing the handle finish and oiling myself for a more durable finish.

Used it for the first time recently. Effortlessly felled a couple of birch and oak saplings. Well balanced, sharp and beautiful craftsmanship.

It's a very good product. It's already in use.

Good for the size but can find it a bit hard to cut through logs but other than that brilliant and you can grip up on the head and cut food and feather stick etc which works perfectly.

I'm thrilled with this Gransfors Bruks Ray Mears Small Forest Axe and the customer service was tops! The axe is gorgeous and immediately I knew it was crafted by a master, someone highly skilled who LOVED doing their craft. It was well wrapped and secured. It is the sharpest chopping, bush tool out of the box that I've ever purchased. The wood is incredible! So smooth and gorgeous and it came well oiled. The leather sheath is gorgeous too! Oiled and freshly made. Workmanship and quality? NONE BETTER! I am still in awe of the beauty of the grain of the wood and how perfectly it fits into the head which is amazingly sharp and perfect. Good piece of kit, perfect grains with the Ray Mears Logo on the handle.

This little axe is well balanced and can be used with one or two hands. Though keep in mind that it is best suited for softwood such as pine and spruce, I tried it on the hard wood (elm) and it did OK but required quite an effort on my side. The axe came without a metal wedge on top of the axe handle which was kind of a disappointment to me but then I read that Gransfors Bruks claims that their handling process had improved and small axes no longer require a metal wedge. Also, the axe handle was rather sharp at the side of the axe blade which would hurt my hand while working with it - that was easily solved by using a sanding paper. I then treated the axe with a mixture of boiled linseed oil and bees wax for a week every day and the color tuned out to be beautiful! Very satisfied with the service by Woodlore - the axe was shipped the same day the order was placed and I received it in Kazakhstan in about 7-8 days, thank you guys!

Excellent piece of kit and fantastic service from Woodlore. As you'll have read elsewhere, this is shaving sharp as supplied and balances nicely. It's a gift for someone so haven't used it yet but wish I'd bought myself one as well! Ordered midday Tuesday, in my hand by 10am Wednesday. Superb. I knew Gransfors were great as I have 2 already but very impressed with Woodlore and heartily recommend them. Spot on.

This is a fantastic axe! It is my first GB, and I can see why they are so highly regarded for craftsmanship and quality. This model, (Small Forest Axe), balances well, has nice weight for use, yet is not too large to fit inside a rucksack. It was also a pleasure dealing with Woodlore. The price, including shipping, was fair, and I got it over here in the US very quickly!

I had previously owned a SFA and always regretted parting with it.
My new axe arrived shaving sharp and I have used it on six occasions for quite heavy work.....it has lived up to my expectations.......highly recommend this product!

Took the axe from the box and it was exactly as I expected. It was razor sharp and I was able to slice paper with it without any further sharpening. After using it I dulled the edge as you might expect. I used the Gransfors stone that I purchased with it and it came back to razor sharp again without too much effort. I always wanted a proper axe and not just a chopper of wood. I am extremely pleased and can thoroughly recommend this axe.

This is my second axe from your site. Fantastic axe but I was splitting small fresh ash logs on first use and noticed a little chip broke off the toe. I am going to take the stone to it and hopefully it will be fine. (did not hit ground with it used a splitting wood block)

I never saw one of these small forest axes until mine arrived at my door- It is so sweet looking! I put a neck guard on it and it looks so nice I don't want to even use it-but when I did, I was very impressed again. A very powerful tool that digs deep and does a lot of work in a short time.

I bought this Small forest axe as a gift for a friend so sadly didn't get the opportunity to use it. However upon inspection I can confirm that it was of the highest quality. The grain of the handle was perfect, running perfectly straight from the knob to the eye and the Ray Mears logo on the handle was nicely done. The axe head was as impressive with a good grind and a nice leather sheath. Compared to my own older Wetterlings (which I also consider to be very good axes) it is obvious that the slightly higher price of the Gransfors Bruks is well justified and they deserve their reputation as excellent high quality tools.
Having previously purchased other items from Ray Mears Woodlore website it was an easy decision to buy this axe from them, the customer service and advice they offer is second to none as is the quality of the products they sell.

Item arrived very fast considering I had it shipped to the U.S. The axe appears to be of great quality. I would have preferred the original gb logo on the handle but functionally the axe is exactly what I wanted. I want to mention that for its size and despite a wood handle, it's remarkably light.
