Heralded by Ray as "the number one axe choice for Bushcraft", the ever-popular Small Forest Axe is an ideal all-round model from Swedish company Gransfors, and weighs in at just 1 kg. It is the middle of the three axe sizes shown in the video above. Each axe head comes individually stamped with the smith’s initials, while the handle features an exclusive embossed Ray Mears logo.
Each axe is of excellent quality; hand-forged and made using traditional Swedish methods. It is fitted with a 50 cm hickory handle and comes with a leather sheath. The length of the handle means it can be used efficiently with one hand or pressed to bigger jobs with two.

Amazing bit of kit, as sharp as my Woodlore knife, and a must-have item for any bushcraft/outdoor person. Made light work of spoon, cup and bowl carving.

After watching the very useful video on the online shop at Woodlore, I was keen to make sure I purchased the right axe for the job I wanted it for. I rang Woodlore and was lucky to have Paul in the office to advise me on the axes. With such a personal service I knew I could not go wrong and this gave me 100% confidence with the advice I received. The axes came the very next day from paying for them, an amazing service. I was so thrilled but we had to wait for the storms to pass before we could safely go out to try them. The quality of the craftsmanship of the axe is just superb, Gransfor has produced an artform just as it is without using the axe for its intended purpose! No splinters on the handles, no snags, an absolute perfect piece of forging and an excellent balance to the axe and we were ready to go. My husband tackled the big stuff and, after a little guidance and safety chat, my thirteen year old son spent the next hour or two cutting up kindling. He was so engrosed with the task, he perfected his growing skill by showing me a huge handful of matchsticks that he had cut (almost without effort) from using the small Forest Axe. We have instilled in him a love of woodcraft and demonstrating the importance in using good quality cutting equipment. This axe will probably last us a lifetime and I have no hesitation in recommending this axe. I have never used such a perfect work of art in the wood! Woodlore's service to their customers is a true joy to experience and I cannot recommend them highly enough. I will not hesitate in purchasing more equipment from Woodlore, such a pleasurable experience it was. Thank you guys for your superb advice and professionalism.

This is an excellent well made and well balanced axe ideal for single handed use if required. I have been using this axe for over a year now and aside from an occasional honing it has remained razor sharp from day 1. Recently when i visited home i was not afraid to employ this axe on a task much larger than it was ever designed for by quartering 2' logs which were badly knotted and it actually out performed my fathers of the shelf american logging axe. A well made tool that deserves a place in any persons toolkit.
