The Scandinavian Axe is a full-sized, two-handed axe from Gransfors, and is the largest of the three axes shown in the video above. It comes individually stamped with the maker's initials and also features an exclusive embossed Ray Mears logo on the handle.

This axe is of excellent quality, hand-forged and made using traditional Swedish methods. With a 64 cm helve, an experienced axe user will have sufficient strength to use it one-handed.

Ray reserves this axe for use almost exclusively in boreal forests in winter where the demands of limbing snow-covered branches and chopping into the tight grain of slow-growing timber present tough work. This is a beautiful axe to use, with a pleasing weight and swing.

I've had this axe for 2 years now, and I have got to say that it's a great bit of kit.

I've only had the chance to use this axe a few times since purchase, but first impressions are excellent! It came well made, the head and haft matched perfectly and it was shaving sharp. It stropped to 'popping' sharp for carving easily and keeps a very good edge. It has split rounds of 8" or so seasoned oak, and although it stuck on the odd occasion (it is after all a limbing axe)the profile separated most of the wood first blow. I've felled (removed at landowners request) one 30ft or so goat willow, about thigh thick and it cuts like a laser. Very controlled and balanced! I really like it. Cheers.
