An interesting addition to your fire-lighting skills, the Solar Spark Lighter is the World's only pocket-sized solar-powered igniter, and was recently used by Ray in the Ray Mears Goes Walkabout series.
Formed of a stainless-steel parabolic mirror, similar to the Olympic torch in Athens.
This lighter requires no maintenance and can be stored indefinitely.
It is designed to focus the sun's radiant energy to a point which can reach 1000 degrees. Simply place your tinder of choice between the points of the forked arm, point at the sun and it lights!
Perfect for backpacking, hiking and great as an outdoor tool.

This is really a great bit of kit. Dublin sunshine in December: I used a Small piece of dried horseshoe fungus and had a glowing ember in less than 20 seconds. Very impressive.

The Solar Lighter lit my tinder (a small piece of fibre egg box) within seconds. But not in the Desert. I used it late afternoon in March, in the West Coast of Ireland to light a fire where I live. A robustly built piece of kit.

The fire starter worked very well from 8am through 4pm. A fire was produced in seconds and it functions well even when it got a little grubby. A quick rub with metal polish brings it back to new condition and being stainless steel it is very sturdy. I have to admit that I used it in the desert region of eastern Saudi Arabia so sunlight was plentiful, I don't know how it would fare in the British climate.
