How to Travel Light in the Backcountry

Applied Bushcraft A night under a lightweight tarp with the sounds and smells of the forest all around you; a good night's sleep after a day on the trail; waking up with the fresh feeling of having slept in the open air; the joy of living amongst nature; quickly packing your simple set-up; heading down the trail with anticipation of the next campsite.....

Lightweight camping in the backwoods has much to offer. The possibilities of where in the natural world this lightweight mode of travel can take you are almost endless.

Travelling light frees you to go further with less effort and allows you a much greater enjoyment of your journey. No-one enjoys being a beast of burden!

For those who have already attended our Fundamental Bushcraft course, this course is designed for people who wish to hit the trail and apply their Bushcraft skills as they go.

Moving on from the basics to the next level, this course provides the skills and knowledge that enable you to hike safely and competently, deep into the backcountry.

Topics covered include:

  • Preparation & Planning
  • Risk management
  • Clothing & equipment
  • Lightweight shelters
  • Trail foods and nutritional requirements
  • Keeping food fresh & safe from wildlife
  • Trail cooking
  • Caring for your feet and trail first-aid
  • Weather - appraisal and forecasting
  • Navigation techniques
  • River crossings & other hazards
  • Survival equipment & emergency bivouacs
  • Communication & Signalling
  • Laws and regulation
  • Ethics & environmental protection

All meals in camp and on the trail will be provided, allowing each student the opportunity to do some backcountry cooking.

If you have special dietary requirements please contact the office. This course starts at 17:30 on Sunday and will finish at 16:00 on Saturday.
