Wilderness Emergency Medic level 2 (WEM2) 2010

WEM 2 Ideal for those who want to travel off the beaten track, outdoor instructors, expedition leaders and teachers, the Wilderness Emergency Medic, level 2 (WEM 2) course is a straightforward, no-nonsense, thorough 6-day long education in vital life-saving skills. Our aim is to teach you so that you will not forget what you must remember when the time comes to draw on this knowledge.

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the certificate of Wilderness Emergency Medic, level 2, issued by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Successful completion of this course also provides an HSE First Aid at Work certificate as well as more advanced First Aid training and knowledge. As such this course provides First Aid training significantly beyond that necessary for participation in various National Governing Body (NGB) awards such as Walking Group Leader Award, Mountain Leader Award (summer), Mountain Leader Award (winter), Single Pitch Award, MIA, MIC, BCU star tests, BASI and BOF.

Miles from the nearest help and faced with a medical emergency is no time to be guessing what to do. You must be able to provide for your companions when it counts. There are many things we can improvise in the field, knowledge of First Aid is not one of them. All of us who travel to remote regions have a duty to undertake First Aid training. Even before you leave, you will be able to properly assess risks while planning a journey - something often overlooked.

For over 30 years, Ray has been travelling in wild and remote places. In the last 25 years Woodlore has run courses and expeditions all over the world. During this time Ray and the Woodlore team have learned from experience what First Aid training is relevant to Bushcraft and wilderness travel. Moreover we have learned what type of first aid training really works!

Taking Ray and the Woodlore team's experience, we joined up with Fusion Medical Ltd, the company we use to train our own staff in First Aid, to develop a unique course aimed specifically at the wilderness traveler. As a provider of First Aid training Fusion Medical brings expertise and a wealth of experience in pre-hospital care. This course has since been approved and recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Realistically based around what can be practically carried, you will be shown what you need to know about dealing with a multitude of injuries and medical conditions. As your skills develop, they will be applied in real-world scenarios with realistic casualty simulations. This is real training for people who want to confidently cope with emergencies

WEM 1 is not a pre-requisite for WEM 2 but you must have passed WEM 2 (or the previous Woodlore First Aid Course) in order to be eligible to attend WEM 3.

This course is conducted from an expedition style camp in East Sussex. This is a self- catering course, so please bring enough food for the week and a stove to cook it on.
