Tracking & Nature Awareness

Woodsense - Tracking and Awareness Tracking is undoubtedly one of the most difficult skills of bushcraft but ultimately one of the most important and rewarding.

Tracking is used by native peoples around the world, being an integral part of the bushcraft skills which have allowed them and their way of life to survive to this day. Tracking is also important for its use in conservation, wildlife monitoring, countering poachers and search and rescue.

Tracking requires us to make the most of our senses. The Woodsense course has evolved over many years and we begin by examining each of our senses in turn to better understand their capabilities as well as their limitations. Through various interesting and fun exercises we then focus on sharpening our senses so that we can get the most out of them, thus noticing more about our surroundings. The more closely we can study the natural environment, and the more familiar we become with it, the better we will be able to discover the often subtle signs left by passing animals.

If we are to observe the animals in their natural environment, rather than just recognising their tracks and sign, we also need to see while remaining unseen. On the Woodsense course you will learn methods of getting close to animals while remaining undetected.

Successful tracking requires concentration, focus and a certain amount of determination. Many beginners find tracking tiring, even frustrating. This is normal. Perseverance with the skill, however, will help you to develop powerful observational and deductive abilities, allowing you to see the natural world, even places you are familiar with, in a new light. You will literally see more! This in turn illuminates your other bushcraft skills, whether you are looking for edible plants, finding tinder or positioning a snare.

This course is conducted from an expedition style camp in East Sussex. This is a self- catering course, so please bring enough food for the week and a stove to cook it on.

This course starts at 17:30 on Sunday and will finish at 16:00 on Saturday.
