Wilderness Emergency Medic level 1 (WEM1) 2011

WEM 1 Ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, teachers and budding outdoor instructors alike, this 2-day course provides a solid introduction to the application of First Aid in the outdoors. The course focuses on dealing with the hazards that we face every day, not just on expeditions. In doing so, the course also raises awareness of risks and how to prevent incidents, keeping you and those with you safe while enjoying the freedom of participating in your chosen activities and pastimes.

The WEM 1 course has been recognised and approved by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and on successful completion you will be awarded the certificate of Wilderness Emergency Medic, level 1. This course will also be recognised by an employer as an Emergency First Aid at Work Qualification (EFAW).

WEM 1 provides First Aid training necessary for participation in various National Governing Body (NGB) awards such as Walking Group Leader Award, Mountain Leader Award (summer), Mountain Leader Award (winter), Single Pitch Award, MIA, MIC, BCU star tests, BASI and BOF.

Taking the Woodlore team's wilderness experience, we have joined forces with Fusion Medical Ltd to provide the Wilderness Emergency Medic courses. Fusion Medical is the company we use to train our own staff in First Aid and they bring a wealth of experience in pre-hospital care and First Aid training.

You will learn a range of important and useful First Aid techniques that will allow you to deal with minor scrapes to serious injuries and illnesses. As well as techniques, you will also learn to apply them in realistic scenarios that mean the knowledge of what to do in an emergency really sticks.

Topics covered on the WEM 1 course include:

  • Effective First Aid kits and equipment
  • Dealing with an unconscious casualty (adults and children)
  • The Primary and Secondary assessment of an unconscious casualty
  • Resuscitation of both adults and children
  • Dealing with a choking casualty
  • Dealing with a casualty who is bleeding
  • Dealing with burns
  • Management of breathing problems
  • Dealing with a casualty who has drowned
  • Environmental hazards and associated conditions
  • Managing various types of fractures

If you would like to take your First Aid training further than WEM1, you can progress onto Wilderness Emergency Medic level 2 (WEM2) and even our forthcoming advanced first aid course - Wilderness Emergency Medic, level 3.

The WEM 1 course is conducted from an expedition style camp in East Sussex and meals will be provided. If you have special dietary requirements please contact the office. The course will start at 17:30 on day 1 and finish at 16:00 on day 3.

We invite you to have a look at the course kit lists here for more information on the items you will need to bring with you for the course.

3 Course Reviews (average rating: 100%)

Just a quick note to let you know how much we enjoyed our WEM1. This was the first Woodlore course that we have attended and we were honoured to be part of the first WEM1 group. The teaching was excellent; a lot of information to process, but everything was taught in such a fun way and with such enthusiasm that it was never boring. And the various scenarios really made this stand out as a First Aid course. Compliments to all the instructors for their acting skills! (is this part of their job description?) We had a wonderful weekend and made lots of new friends. We're hoping to do some other Woodlore courses in the near future, but are already looking forward to a refresher course next year! (or maybe even WEM2?)

Dear all at Woodlore, What a fantastic course WEM1 was. Jamie and Fran were fantastic trainers supported by a great Woodlore team (Paul, Emma and Adrian). Thank you so much for organising it. Kind regards, Roger Abrahams

I found the WEM1 very enjoyable, run by a very knowledgable group of instructors in an interesting and well thought out manner. I'm currently trying to get the deposit together to book onto next years WEM2.
