The Heart of the Camp

Hand Drill
For Ray, life is inconceivable without a camp-fire. When spirits are high, a fire's flames provide joyful light; and when spirits are low, the consoling warmth of the embers will thaw the frozen heart.

Your old faithful waterproof has finally stopped working. The matches which you always keep in an inside pocket are now as a result thoroughly soaked through. Coming down from the hills to camp in the wooded valley below you realise that your lighter has stopped working too. As well as your layers being wet you also remember that your food needs to be heated to be edible. . . .

Fire separates us from the animal kingdom. In our modern day life think where we would be if fire was not within our grasp. In the forest it provides us with a whole host of benefits: heat, the ability to clean and cook, the capacity to make water safe and a mesmerising fire offers a morale boosting focal point. The list is nearly endless.

On this 2-day course we will start with the very important basics, from how to light a match correctly, right through to advanced friction fire-lighting techniques. Expect to work and be worked hard on this course - only with effort will you be rewarded with the knowledge of how to successfully light and manage a fire in any condition. This course will cover:

  • Fire lighting techniques (see below)
  • Legal issues of fire lighting in the UK
  • Responsibility of fire
  • Uses of fire
  • Where to site a fire
  • Carving feathersticks
  • Tinders
  • Cooking over a fire
  • Signalling
  • Carrying fire, and
  • Leaving no trace

You will learn the following fire lighting techniques (dependant on weather conditions): Solar Spark Lighter, Firestick, Fire Piston, Flint and Steel, Bow drill, Hand Drill, Fire Plough, Drill and Pump, Fire Saw, and Fire Thong.

This course will start at 17:30 on day 1 and will finish at 16:00 on day 3.

Catering
Please be aware that this is a 2-day, self catered course, so ensure you bring enough food for the duration and a stove to cook it on. Many clients have found in the past, bringing a cool box is useful to keep all of your food inside.

We provide a kettle, tea, coffee, squash and biscuits in a brew box at the main camp fire of the course, under a large parachute. We also have fresh drinking water and a fruit bowl available.

Course Site
The Fire Lighting workshop will take place at an expedition style camp in East Sussex, close to Tunbridge Wells. The camp is situated in beautiful private woodland with no public access with lots of wildlife including deer, owls, badgers, fox and butterflies. We do not have shower/toilet blocks at our sites, therefore all aspects of the course will have a fantastic wilderness feel, using a screened camp shower and a screened latrine in the woods.

We have a car park at the course site where you your car will be kept during the course (if you bring one).

Other Details
Joining instructions will be sent to participants of the course 9 weeks before it is due to start giving details of where to meet, at what time, and what to bring with you.
