Flint knapped by Will Lord
Surrounded by the sights and sounds of Britain's beautiful countryside, with the smell of the neaby campfire in the air, we will transport you back in time to the early Bronze Age, teaching you the skills to competently make your own stone tools of the past.

This course will be uniquely based on the Amesbury Archer, also known as, King of Stonehenge. The grave of this man was found when excavating land for a housing development in Wiltshire, just three miles from Stonehenge. His grave was the richest from this period in time ever found and contained the country's earliest gold objects. On this course we will be aiming to recreate some of the flint tools found in the Amesbury Archers grave.

This course will be the closest you will get to travelling back in a time machine to the Bronze Age era. One of the most intriguing features of our Bronze Age ancestors is that, except for the stone tools and a few other artefacts that have withstood the destruction of our acidic soil, they left almost no impact on the landscape. It is difficult for us to imagine living in a world without metal, but that was exactly the world our ancestors lived and thrived in.

Explore a glimpse into our British past by joining us on our flint knapping course. You will be guided by flint knapping expert, Will Lord, who has spent most of his life learning and perfecting the art.

He will start by introducing you to the history of stone use in Britain, the geology and ultimately lead you to proficiency in the methods used to accurately and predictably fashion flint.

Like all our courses, this is a hands-on course and you will leave with your own stone tools and increased fascination about our roots as human beings.

The subjects taught on this course include:
  • History of stone use
  • Alternatives to flint
  • Geology uses
  • Knapping tools
  • Knapping techniques
  • Using flint tools

This course will start at 17:30 on day 1 and will finish at 16:00 on day 3.

Catering
This course is self-catering course, so please bring enough food for the duration of the course and a stove to cook it on. Many clients have found in the past, bringing a cool box is useful to keep all of your food inside.

We provide a kettle, tea, coffee, squash and biscuits in a brew box at the main camp fire of the course, under a large parachute. We also have fresh drinking water and a fruit bowl available.

Course Site
The Flint Knapping course will take place at an expedition style camp in East Sussex, close to Uckfield. The camp is situated in beautiful private woodland with no public access with lots of wildlife including deer, owls, badgers, fox and butterflies. We do not have shower/toilet blocks at our sites, therefore all aspects of the course will have a fantastic wilderness feel, using screened camp shower and a screened latrine in the woods.

We also have a car park at the course site where your car will be kept during the course (if you bring one). We also offer lifts from the local train station at Buxted before and after the course.

Other Details
Joining instructions will be sent to participants of the course 9 weeks before it is due to start giving details of where to meet, at what time, and what to bring with you.
